In recent years, Associated Churches has begun offering ways for local Christians to reach out to those hurting in our world. In May of 2010, we sent a team of over 20 people to minister to those in need of physical and mental care in Haiti after the devastating earthquake. Associated Churches is developing a disaster response and missions ministry. Our goal is to connect the faith community, its volunteers and resources in times of disaster.

When Disaster Strikes Elsewhere...How Can You Help?

When we hear of a disaster in the next town, across the country, or on the other side of the world, the first thing you want to do is help.

It might seem cliche, but the fact is the best thing you can do at first is deploy your dollars. During the recovery phase, opportunities to volunteer in person might arise. But response organizations need your financial support immediately. Where should you send it? Here are some suggestions:

• Your own denomination. Most national Christian denominations have their own disaster ministries. Check your denomination's website or check with your pastor.

• A member of National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster. NVOAD includes the American Red Cross and other national organizations that coordinate their responses with each other to avoid duplication of services and to assure they meet as many needs as possible. Find a list of members on the NVOAD website, www.nvoad.org.

• Use a charity report website. Search for a charity and review its accountability score on a reputable website such as www.charitynavigator.org.
